COC boroughs
In each district, a small working group will make connections, facilitate, develop and implement activities aimed at increasing and strengthening lhbtqi-friendly districts, neighborhoods and streets. The specific interpretation will differ per district and depend on local needs and the individual interest of the working group members involved. Hereby cooperation is explicitly sought with other lhbtqi organizations, self-organizations, (semi)government. But also with, for example, educational institutions and business associations.
New West district
In Amsterdam Nieuw-West, 160,000 inhabitants, there is a long tradition of lhbtiqa+ activities. On the one hand, since board chairman Ahmed Marcouch (2006) from the government, on the other hand through cooperation between: Pink Nieuw-West, Lesbocode, Ondersteboven, Roze Stadsdorp and COC Amsterdam e.o.
Initiatives in New West
The Willinklaan asylum center has hosted lhbtiq+ meetings several times a month since 2021, from which an app group has emerged with over a hundred members now. The meetings are currently organized by student group 'Vooruit'. Our district representative Pim Ligtvoet participates in these meetings in particular. Different topics are discussed, there are guest speakers and the result is connection and empowerment. Every year the representative stands with a stand of COC Amsterdam e.o. at the opening of Pride Nieuw-West at the Sloterplas. With members of the azc-lhbtiqa+ group, he visits the Gay Monument every year. COCAmsterdamNieuwWest has its own Facebook page.
East district
Amsterdam Oost, 140,000 inhabitants, has one of the most active district COCs, with ambassadors Hein Rijkenburg and Marjan Muis. Among other things, activities are organized regarding LGBTQIA+ elderly, safety, and connecting between and with bi-cultural youth and elderly.
