The exhibition ‘What a Genderful World’ will be opened in the Tropenmuseum on Thursday 10 October at 9 p.m. In a festival-like setting, dive into the world of gender and discover how this is expressed and experienced worldwide.
On Fiji policemen wear a skirt. Pink has only been a girls’ colour since the 1950s in the West. He and she do not exist in the Turkish language. And in Mexico there is a third gender besides male and female: muxe. Experience these and more in the exhibition with objects from the museum collection, photographic art, fashion and personal stories.
Experience it yourself
So get going, we challenge you! Hit a punch bag and show your strength. Plunge into a ball pit of boobs that gets you thinking about power. Or do a photo shoot to become aware of what is typically a ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ pose.
On display from 11 October 2019 to 23 August 2020. The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Address: Linnaeusstraat 2, 1092 CK Amsterdam
